Katy Perry - Last Friday Night
The genre of Katy Perry's music video; Last Friday Night is pop. This is the genre that is seen throughout the majority of her music. This genre often has characteristics such as events that are relatable to everyday life and character behaviors which are often seen within communities. The video is set in a big house and there is a stereotypical American mainstream house party. In films you often see the different group that are thought to be around in current time such as the geeks and jok's. These groups are shown in the video and this means that people will see this and relate it to films they have seen and conventions that are allocated to certain characteristics.
There is a narrative that illustrates and demonstrates the meaning of the song's lyrics. There is a narrative used in the music video that goes with the song and is relatable by the majority of the public viewing the video. The music video is about a party and the aftermath of the party and the behaviors of different characters in the music video that are relatable to everyday life such as parties and drinking.
The music fits with the atmosphere of the video because there is a house party and the music has an upbeat vibe with many of the characters dancing and having a good time. There is a part in the video where there is a saxophone being played and this fits with the video because in the video you can see this is happening at the party and the people are watching it and enjoying listening to the music.
There are allot of close up's of the artist throughout the video. In the video Katy is playing a geeky character which means that she isn't creating a recognizable style because she wouldn't normally dress and behave like she does in the video. Even though this is true she still creates an image for herself because she is going against the typical performance of having closeups showing the artist as they will be displayed across the majority of there songs.
There isn't really any reference to notion of looking. instead the video features the camera's viewing the hole party almost as a spectator to see the events unfold. This creates a feeling of being a person at the party but not getting involved instead you see the geeky character changing alot and letting lose and having a really good time.
There is intertextual reference to Rebeca Black because she is featured in the video with Katy Perry and the song is about Friday which is also the theme in one of Rebeca Black's famous videos.
